Description

Simpson et al lists criteria for when to consider a licensed driver private or commercial in Canada.


Features of a private driver - all of the following:

(1) at least one of the following:

(1a) distance driven per year < 36,000 kilometer (22,370 miles)

(1b) spends < 720 hours per year behind the wheel

(2) drives a vehicle that weights < 11,000 kilograms (24,200 lbs)

(3) does not earn a living by driving

 

A person who meets all of the criteria can be considered a private driver.

A person who does not is considered to be a commercial driver.
