Description

Some patients with ciguatera poisoning may experience chronic neurologic symptoms for some time after the acute episode. Some patients may have persistent problems for years afterwards.


 

Chronic neurologic symptoms may include:

(1) paresthesias, numbness or other sign of peripheral neuropathy

(2) chronic fatigue

(3) chronic pain

(4) ataxia or other cerebellar signs

(5) mood disorder

(6) general weakness (may include polymyositis)

(7) dizziness

(8) autonomic dysfunction

 

When significant these symptoms can:

(1) affect the patient’s quality of life

(2) result in significant disability
