Description

Onciu reviewed chromosomal abnormalities in patients with Burkitt's lymphoma (BL). They identified chromosomal mutations affecting the prognosis for pediatric and adult patients. The authors are from St. Jude's Children's Hospital in Memphis, M.D. Anderson Cancer Center and the University of Tennessee.


 

Burkitt's lymphoma is associated with translocations of the c-myc oncogene at 8q24 with other genes. In 70-80% of patients there is a translocation with 14q32.

For a pediatric patient (age <= 18 years) a worse prognosis was seen with mutations affecting:

(1) 13q

(2) 22q (including 22q11.2, above)

 

For an adult patient (age >= 19 years) a worse prognosis was seen with mutations affecting:

(1) 17
