Description

Tsai et al developed a classification tree for patients with asthma in the Emergency Department. This can help to identify a patient who may need to be admitted. The authors are from Massachusetts General Hospital and the University of Pittsburgh.

CHOP is an acronym for the 4 parameters involved.

Patient selection: acute asthma in the Emergency Department

Outcome: admission

Parameters:

(1) change in peak expiratory flow (C), improved or not improved

(2) ever hospitalized for asthma (H)

(3) oxygen saturation on room air (O)

(4) initial peak expiratory flow (P), mild, moderate, severe or very severe
