Description

Chlorine dioxide (ClO2) is related to household bleach (sodium hypochlorite, NaOCl). It is used as a bleaching agent and disinfectant. It has been distributed as an alternative health agent (Miracle Mineral Solution, Miracle Mineral Supplement, others).


It has been used to disinfect public water supplies and to treat air in buildings.

 

It is being sold as an alternative health agent as a cure for a variety of ailments. It may be "activated" by the addition of citric acid or lemon juice.

 

It may be ingested or used as an enema.

 

It can be toxic if the amount or concentration is too high.

 

Toxic effects include:

(1) nausea and vomiting

(2) esophagitis

(3) diarrhea

(4) intestinal necrosis (if used as an enema)

(5) renal failure

(6) hemolysis

(7) severe dehydration

(8) myocardial injury
