Description

Schover listed several risk factors for premature ovarian failure in a woman being treated for cancer. A woman enters permanent menopause once the number of primordial follicles drops below a critical level. The author is from the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston.


 

Patient selection: premenopausal woman

 

Risk factors related to the patient:

(1) age > 35 years

(2) menstrual periods short and/or irregular

(3) menses stopped for any length of time after chemotherapy

 

Risk factors associated with therapy received:

(1) chemotherapy with an alkylating agent

(2) chemotherapy with a taxane

(3) long-term chemotherapy with tamoxifen (possibly)

(4) systemic chemotherapy with a high cumulative dose

 

Additional factors to consider (not listed in paper):

(1) high dose radiation therapy to the ovaries

(2) pre-existing disorder reducing ovarian follicles

(3) subtotal surgical resection of ovarian tissue
