Description

Capillary zone electrophoresis can be used to separate and measure different serum protein fractions. Certain chemicals can interfere with the test.

Basis: ultraviolet light is used for measurement. Exogenous UV-absorbing chemicals may interfere with the reading of protein bands.

UV-absorbing chemicals include:

(1) drugs such as antibiotics

(2) intravenous iodine-based contrast agents

Algorithm of Seaux et al compares the absorption of a band at 210 nm vs 246 nm. All of the interfering substances absorb at 246 nm

Band

Absorption at 210 nm

true paraprotein

greater than at 246 nm

interfering substance

less than at 246 nm

A repeat specimen collected without interfering substances should support the interpretation.
