Description

The Checklist of Nonverbal Pain Indicators (CNPI) can help to identify pain in a cognitively impaired older adult. The author is from the University of Minnesota.


Behaviors:

(1) nonverbal vocal complaints (groans, moans, sighs, etc)

(2) verbal vocal complaints expressing pain or discomfort

(3) facial grimacing or wincing

(4) bracing

(5) restlessness

(6) rubbing or massaging an affected area

 

Observations:

(1) with movement

(2) while at rest

 

Each behavior is scored 1 if it occurs at all, even briefly.

 

subscore for movement =

= SUM(points for behaviors while moving)

 

subscore for at rest =

= SUM(points for behaviors while at rest)

 

Interpretation:

minimum subscore or total score: 0

maximum subscore: 6

maximum total score: 12

Any positive behavior warrants further investigation.
