Description

Certain documentation should be maintained on all patients undergoing therapeutic phlebotomy.

Documentation for therapeutic phlebotomy:

(1) a proper order from the patient's physician

(2) informed consent from the patient

(3) endpoint specified

(3a) number to perform

(3b) metabolic status to achieve

(4) volume removed

(5) patient status before, during and after the procedure

(5a) vital signs

(5b) adverse events

(6) disposition of the phlebotomized unit

Usually the unit of collected blood is disposed of as medical waste. However, there has been growing interest in using blood from patients with hemochromatosis as donated units for allotransfusion.
