Description

During pregnancy some women experience a change in their sense of smell.

The changes tend to be most noticeable during the first trimester.

The threshold for detecting smells does not appear to be altered (Cameron, 2014).

Changes may include:

(1) a change in perception of odors as pleasant or unpleasant

(2) a distortion of smells

(3) phantosmia

A woman may:

(1) find some environmental or ambient odors intolerable

(2) reduce use of perfumes or colognes
