Description

A person with carbon monoxide poisoning may suffer transient or long-term loss of vision or visual acuity.


Patient selection: carbon monoxide poisoning

 

Possible explanations for a change in vision:

(1) hypoxic retinopathy

(2) retinal hemorrhage

(3) vitreous hemorrhage

(4) disc edema

(5) damage to the vision centers in the occipital cortex (detectable on PET scan)

(6) optic nerve damage

(7) keratopathy

(8) macular disease

 

The effects of carbon monoxide may also include:

(1) retinal vein tortuosity

(2) hemorrhages in the internal limiting membrane
