Description

Shin et al reported a model for predicting blood loss and transfusion associated with a revision total hip arthroplasty. The authors are from Seoul National University Bundang Hospital in Seoul.

Patient selection: revision total hip arthroplasty

Analysis: ROTEM (rotational thromboelastometry)

Parameters:

(1) preoperative FIBTEM in mm

(2) postoperative FIBTEM in mm

change rate in FIBTEM in percent =

= ((FIBTEM postoperative) - (FIBTEM preoperative)) / (FIBTEM postoperative) * 100%

Interpretation:

A percent change rate in FIBTEM >= 29% is associated with (1) increased blood loss (>= 1,000 mL intraoperative or >= 500 mL postoperative) and (2) greater incidence in red blood cell transfusion.
