Description

Allergies in children and adolescents can pose a number of problems for school administrators. Each school should perform a periodic risk assessment to make sure that the handling of any emergency is adequate and appropriate.


 

Sources of significant allergic reactions in schools:

(1) food

(2) latex

(3) insects

(4) inhalations (mold, pollen, air pollution, etc)

(5) physical urticaria

(6) exercise-induced

 

Sites where exposures generally occur:

(1) lunchroom

(2) art classroom

(3) gymnasium or playground

(4) laboratory

 

Tasks for the school administrators:

(1) identifying and limiting allergens in the foods provided at school

(2) preventing the sharing of foods that may contain allergens

(3) identifying sources of allergen exposure in supplies and equipment

(4) providing support for parents of allergic students

(5) managing diverse personal management plans

(6) providing access to emergency medical supplies and care

(7) providing adequate training to school personnel

(8) maintaining confidentiality

(9) ensuring that allergic students get an adequate education
