Description

McCarthy et al reported the CF-ABLE score for evaluating a patient with cystic fibrosis (CF). This can help to identify a patient who may benefit from more aggressive management. The authors are from the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland, the University of Southampton and Beaumont Hospital in Dublin.

ABLE is an acronym for age, BMI, lung function and exacerbations.

Patient selection: cystic fibrosis

Outcome: death or lung transplantation within 4 years

Parameters:

(1) average FEV1 as percent of predicted for past 3 months

(2) number of exacerbations requiring IV antibiotics over the past 3 months

(3) body mass index in kg per square meter

(4) age in years

Interpretation:

• minimum score: 0

• maximum score: 7

• A score >= 5 is associated with a 26% chance of a poor outcome within 4 years.
