Description

Ganglioneuromas can arise from the sympathetic chain adjacent to the spine along its entire length. A cervical ganglioneuroma is one that arises in the neck.


Features:

(1) It can present at any age.

(2) It tends to be slow-growing.

(3) The tumor may be dumbbell shaped.

(4) It may be mistaken for a goiter, carotid body tumor or other neck mass.

(5) Cytology or biopsy shows neural elements including ganglion cells, Schwann cells and nerve fibers.

(6) Serum catecholamine levels may be elevated if the tumor is large.
