Description

Central pontine myelinolysis is most often associated with rapid correction of hyponatremia. However, other causes such as hypokalemia can also cause the condition.


Clinical features:

(1) central pontine myelinolysis

(2) presence of hypokalemia

(3) variable hypokalemic myopathy

(4) exclusion of hyponatremia and other causes of myelinolysis

 

Some patients may have both hyponatremia and hypokalemia.

 

Conditions with myelinolysis and hypokalemia may include:

(1) hypokalemic nephrogenic diabetes insipidus

(2) anorexia nervosa or bulimia

(3) diabetic ketoacidosis or diabetes with sepsis

(4) SLE

(5) Sjogren's syndrome

(6) recurrent vomiting
