Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) have developed surveillance definitions for health care-associated infection (HCAI) and specific types of infections in health care settings. Pustulosis of an infant can be diagnosed if certain findings are present.


 

Patient selection: newborn or infant <= 12 months of age

 

Criteria for the diagnosis of pustulosis – both of the following:

(1) presence of one or more pustules

(2) one or both of the following:

(2a) a physician diagnoses a skin infection

(2b) a physican starts appropriate antimicrobial therapy

 

Exclusions:

(1) erythema toxicum

(2) noninfectious causes of pustulosis

 

An infection that occurs in the hospital or within 7 days after hospital discharge should be considered to be health care-associated.
