Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) have developed surveillance definitions for health care-associated infection (HCAI) and specific types of infections in health care settings. Mastoiditis can be diagnosed if certain findings are present.


 

Mastoiditis is a subtype of ear and mastoid infections (EAR).

 

Criteria for the diagnosis of mastoiditis – one or both of the following:

(1) pathogens culture from purulent drainage from the mastoid

(2) all of the following:

(2a) 2 or more of the following:

(2a1) fever (temperature > 38°C)

(2a2) pain

(2a3) tenderness

(2a4) erythema

(2a5) headache

(2a6) facial paralysis on the same side

(2b) no other recognized cause

(2c) one or both of the following:

(2c1) microorganisms seen on Gram stain of purulent fluid from mastoid

(2c2) positive antigen test done on blood
