Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and National Healthcare Safety Network (NHSN) have developed surveillance definitions for health care-associated infection (HCAI) and specific types of infections in health care settings. These include criteria for the diagnosis of Asymptomatic Bacteriuria (ASB).


 

Parameters:

(1) indwelling urinary catheter within 7 days prior to culture

(2) urine culture

(3) symptoms of urinary tract infection (fever > 38°C, urgency, frequency, dysuria, suprapubic tenderness)

 

An ASB is diagnosed if one of the following is present:

(1) criteria 1

(2) criteria 2

Positive urine culture:

(1) >= 10^5 bacteria per mL urine

(2) 1 or 2 species of micro-organisms (bacteria or yeast)

(3) acceptable specimen (not urine catheter tip and not from urine bag; may be clean catch, clean catheter, or suprapubic aspiration)
