Description

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention has developed a guideline for preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) to prevent spread of HIV to certain high risk populations. One group involves adults who are actively heterosexual.


 

A candidate for HIV preexposure prophylaxis – all of the following

(1) adult

(2) without established HIV infection or acute HIV infection

(3) has engaged in sexual activity with a member of the opposite sex in the past 6 months

(4) not in a monogamous partnership with an HIV-negative partner (confirmed by recent testing)

(5) one or more of the following:

(5a) male who is bisexually active (has sec with both men and women)

(5b) ongoing sexual relationship with an HIV-positive partner

(5c) infrequently uses condoms during sex with >= 1 partner(s) of unknown HIV status AND the partner is at substantial risk for HIV infection

 

where:

• An adolescent can be sexually active and so may be at risk. However, providing prophylaxis to this population may require involvement of the patient’s parents or guardians.

• Substantial risk for HIV infection includes intravenous drug use or bisexual male partner.
