Description

Infections of the oral cavity includes infection of the mouth, tongue, or gums.


 

Criteria 1: organism isolated from culture of purulent material from tissues or oral cavity

 

Criteria 2 - at least one of the following:

(1) abscess or other evidence of oral cavity infection seen on direct examination

(2) abscess or other evidence of oral cavity infection seen during surgery

(3) abscess or other evidence of oral cavity infection seen by histopathologic examination

 

Criteria 3 - both of the following:

(1) at least one of the following:

(1a) abscess

(1b) ulceration

(1c) raised white patches on inflamed mucosa

(1d) plaques on oral mucosa

(2) at least one of the following:

(2a) organisms seen on Gram stain

(2b) positive potassium hydroxide (KOH) stain

(2c) positive antigen test on oral secretions

(2d) multinucleated giant cells seen on microscopic examination of mucosal scrapings

(2e) diagnostic single IgM antibody titer for pathogen

(2f) fourfold increase in IgG antibody titer in paired serum samples for pathogen

(2g) physician's diagnosis and treatment with topical or oral antifungal therapy
