Omphalitis infection in the newborn indicates infection of the umbilicus.
Criteria 1 - all of the following:
(1) age <= 30 days
(2) erythema and/or serous drainage from umbilicus
(3) at least one of the following:
(3a) organism isolated from culture of drainage
(3b) organism isolated from culture of needle aspirate
(3c) organism isolated from blood culture
Criteria 2 - both of the following:
(2) erythema and purulent drainage at umbilicus
