Description

The diagnosis of meningitis or ventriculitis must meet one of the following 3 criteria.


 

Criteria 1: organism isolated from culture of cerebrospinal fluid

 

Criteria 2 - all of the following:

(1) age > 12 months

(2) at least one of the following symptoms:

(2a) fever (> 38° C)

(2b) headache

(2c) stiff neck

(2d) meningeal signs

(2e) cranial nerve signs

(2f) irritability

(3) no other recognized cause for symptoms

(4) physician institutes appropriate antimicrobial therapy if diagnosis is made antemortem

(5) at least one of the following:

(5a) increased white blood cells, elevated protein and/or decreased glucose in CSF

(5b) organisms seen on Gram stain of CSF

(5c) organism isolated from blood culture

(5d) positive antigen test on CSF, blood or urine

(5e) diagnostic single antibody titer (IgM) for pathogen

(5f) fourfold increase in titer in paired serum samples (IgG) for pathogen

 

Criteria 3 - all of the following:

(1) age <= 12 months

(2) at least one of the following symptoms

(2a) fever (> 38° C) or hypothermia (< 37° C)

(2b) apnea, bradycardia

(2c) stiff neck

(2d) meningeal signs

(2e) cranial nerve signs

(2f) irritability

(3) no other recognized cause for symptoms

(4) physician institutes appropriate antimicrobial therapy if diagnosis is made antemortem

(5) one or more of the following:

(5a) increased white blood cells, elevated protein and/or decreased glucose in CSF

(5b) organisms seen on Gram stain of CSF

(5c) organism isolated from blood culture

(5d) positive antigen test on CSF, blood or urine

(5e) diagnostic single antibody titer (IgM) for pathogen

(5f) fourfold increase in titer in paired serum samples (IgG) for pathogen
