Description

Intraabdominal infections includes infections of the gallbladder, bile ducts, liver, spleen, pancreas, peritoneum, subphrenic space, subdiaphragmatic space, or other intraabdominal tissue or area not specified elsewhere. Hepatitis and other infections specified elsewhere are excluded.


 

Criteria 1 - one of the following:

(1) organism isolated from culture of purulent material from intraabdominal space obtained during surgery

(2) organism isolated from culture of purulent material from intraabdominal space obtained by needle aspiration

 

Criteria 2 - one of the following:

(1) abscess or other evidence of intraabdominal infection seen during surgery

(2) abscess or other evidence of intraabdominal infection seen by histopathologic examination

 

Criteria 3 - all of the following:

(1) two or more of the following symptoms:

(1a) fever (> 38°C)

(1b) nausea

(1c) vomiting

(1d) abdominal pain

(1e) jaundice

(2) no other recognized cause for the symptoms

(3) one of the following:

(3a) organism isolated from culture of drainage from surgically placed drain

(3b) organism seen on Gram stain of drainage or tissue obtained during surgery

(3c) organism seen on Gram stain of drainage or tissue obtained by needle aspiration

(3d) organism isolated from blood culture AND radiographic evidence of infection
