Breast abscess or mastitis can be diagnosed by meeting one of the following criteria.
Criteria 1 - at least one of the following:
(1) organism isolated from culture of affected breast tissue or fluid obtained by incision and drainage
(2) organism isolated from culture of affected breast tissue or fluid obtained by needle aspiration
Criteria 2 - at least one of the following:
(1) breast abscess or other evidence of infection seen during surgery
(2) breast abscess or other evidence of infection seen on histopathologic examination
Criteria 3 - all of the following:
(1) fever (> 38°C)
(2) local inflammation of the breast
(3) physician's diagnosis of breast abscess or mastitis
