Description

Neonatal hepatitis can be caused by a wide range of conditions.


Presentation of neonatal hepatitis: jaundice, pale stools, dark urine, hyperbilirubinemia and elevated serum transaminases

 

Genetic disorders with neonatal hepatitis:

(1) galactosemia

(2) alpha-1 antitrypsin deficiency

(3) cystic fibrosis

(4) chromosomal abnormality

(5) Niemann-Pick disease

(6) Gaucher's disease

(7) hyperimmunoglobulinemia D syndrome (HIDS)

 

Infectious causes of neonatal hepatitis

(1) hepatitis A, B or C

(2) toxoplasmosis

(3) bacterial infections

(4) cytomegalovirus (CMV)

(5) scrub typhus

(6) Herpesvirus

(7) other viruses

 

Other:

(1) hepatotoxin

(2) drug reaction

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) hemolytic disease of the newborn

(2) biliary atresia

(3) other cause of obstructive jaundice
