Osteonecrosis of the humeral head is relatively common and can be due to a range of conditions.
Causes of osteonecrosis of the humeral head include:
(1) fracture, including fracture-dislocation
(2) sickle cell disease
(3) Gaucher disease
(4) systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE), or other rheumatologic disorders
(5) Caisson disease (dysbaric conditions)
(6) alcohol abuse
(7) corticosteroid therapy
(8) organ transplantation
MRI is the modality of choice for diagnosis and determination of extent.
