Normal Pressure Hydrocephalus (NPH) may or may not have an identifiable cause.
Conditions that can cause NPH (secondary):
(1) head trauma
(2) intracranial surgery
(3) meningitis
(4) subarachnoid hemorrhage
If no condition is identified, then it is termed primary NPH.
Implications:
(1) A shunt operation is more likely to be successful in relieving symptoms for a patient with secondary NPH.
(2) The diagnosis of NPH may be made quickly with secondary NPH since it is easier to recognize the cause.
