Description

A male may develop hypergonadotropic hypogonadism due to a number of causes.


Features:

(1) hypogonadism

(2) elevated gonadotropins (FSH, LH)

 

Causes of hypergonadotropic hypogonadism include:

(1) testicular trauma or surgery

(2) testicular torsion

(3) infection involving the testis (mumps, HIV, leprosy, tuberculosis, other)

(4) autoimmune orchitis (polyglandular syndrome)

(5) testicular cancer

(6) ionizing radiation exposure

(7) genetic defect (Klinefelter, Noonan, microdeletions of Y chromosome, XYY, mosaicism with 47XXY and 46 XY, XX/X0)

(8) developmental problems (maldescended testes, anorchia, testicular agenesis)

(9) problems with androgen synthesis

(10) drugs

(11) severe systemic hypotension

(12) anorchia
