Description

The bone isoenzyme of alkaline phosphatase may be elevated in a number of conditions, especially those associated with osteoblastic activity..

Situations where the bone isoenzyme of alkaline phosphatase may be elevated:

(1) pediatric population, associated with bone growth

(2) Paget’s disease of bone

(3) metabolic bone disease

(4) osteosarcoma or other primary bone tumors

(5) metastatic carcinoma to bone

If a patient has cancer, then it is important to distinguish the bone isoenzyme from cancer-related isoenzymes. A patient with cancer metastatic to bone also may show increased liver isoenzyme if there are hepatic metastases.
