Description

Copper may become deposited (chalcosis) in the cornea from exogenous and/or endogenous sources. The metal imparts a diffuse, greenish-blue color.


 

Exogenous source for the copper:

(1) chronic use of eye drops containing copper sulfate

(2) intraocular copper foreign body (see above)

(3) copper metal worker

(4) agricultural workers (copper containing fungicides)

 

Endogenous source for the copper:

(1) Wilson's disease (also see Kayser-Fleischer ring, below)

(2) primary biliary cirrhosis, autoimmune hepatitis and other liver diseases

(3) elevated serum copper (hypercupremia) associated with:

(3a) multiple myeloma, leukemia or malignant lymphoma

(3b) chronic anemia

(3c) carcinoma of lung, GI tract, breast, etc

(3d) excessive acute or chronic copper ingestion (which may include folk medicines)

(3e) chronic infection
