Description

Chorea may be caused by a wide range of conditions, including inherited disorders.


Hereditary conditions associated with chorea:

(1) Huntington's chorea

(2) benign hereditary chorea

(3) neuroacanthocytosis

(4) metabolic disorders (see below)

(5) neurodegenerative disorders (see below)

 

Hereditary metabolic disorders which can feature chorea include:

(1) Wilson's disease

(2) Lesch-Nyhan syndrome

(3) lysosomal storage disease

(4) amino acid disorders

(5) Leigh disease

(6) porphyria

 

Hereditary neurodegenerative disorders which can feature chorea include:

(1) olivopontocerebellar atrophy

(2) Machado-Joseph disease

(3) ataxia telengiectasia

(4) tuberous sclerosis

(5) Hallervorden-Spatz disease

(6) Friedreich's ataxia

(7) familial calcification of the basal ganglia
