Description

A number of conditions may be associated with ankylosis of the temporomandibular joint (TMJ).


 

Conditions associated with ankylosis of the TMJ:

(1) trauma to the jaw

(2) local infection (otitis media or mastoiditis, etc)

(3) systemic infection

(3a) tuberculosis

(3b) gonorrhoea

(4) rheumatologic disorders

(4a) ankylosing spondylitis

(4b) rheumatoid arthritis

(4c) psoriatic arthritis

(5) coagulopathy with intra-articular hematoma

 

Factors increasing the risk for ankylosis:

(1) poor care

(2) protein-calorie malnutrition
