Description

Angioid streaks:are breaks in Bruch's membrane associated with degeneration and calcification of the elastic layer..


 

On fundoscopic examination they appear as streaks radiating out from the optic disk. They are named for a resemblance to blood vessels (:angioid").

 

Differential diagnosis:

(1) pseudoxanthoma elasticum (PXE)

(2) sickle cell anemia, sickle thalassemia or beta thalassemia

(3) Paget's disease of bone (osteitis deformans)

(4) high myopia

(5) acromegaly

(6) familial hyperphosphatemia
