A patient who has had a Roux-en-Y gastric bypass is at risk for anemia.
Patient selection: Roux-en-Y gastric bypass
Causes of anemia include:
(1) vitamin B12 deficiency
(2) folate deficiency
(3) iron deficiency
(4) chronic blood loss from ulcerations
(5) copper deficiency
(6) selenium deficiency
(7) vitamin A deficiency
Multiple causes may be present.
Risk factors for anemia:
(1) failure to follow-up with gastric bypass specialists
(2) failure to take vitamin and mineral supplements
