Sometimes there will be a discrepancy between a parent’s and child’s ABO type. The cause can often be found by a careful investigation,


 

Possible explanations for a discrepancy in ABO types between a parent and child.

(1) cis-AB (often with AB mother, O child or O mother, AB child)

(2) Bombay phenotype (Oh, hh)

(3) assisted reproduction with donated ovum or sperm

(4) different paternity

(5) specimen error

(6) laboratory error

(7) baby switch in the nursery

(8) adoption

 

If an explanation cannot be found then it may be necessary to perform genetic testing of identity on mother, father and child.
