Description

A fecal impaction may occur secondary to a number of conditions.


 

Medications that interfere with gastrointestinal motility:

(1) opiates (methadone, etc)

(2) anticholinergic drugs

(3) calcium channel blockers

(4) certain antacids

(5) oral iron preparations

 

Other ingested materials:

(1) barium contrast agents

(2) bezoars

(3) diet (inadequate fiber and insufficient fluids)

 

Conditions associated with chronic constipation:

(1) anatomic disorders

(2) neurogenic disorders (Hirschsprung’s etc)

(3) metabolic disorders and debilitation

 

Anatomic anorectal disorders:

(1) megarectum (Chaga’s disease, other)

(2) anorectal stenosis

(3) tumor

 

Functional anorectal disorder:

(1) increased rectal compliance

(2) abnormalities of rectal sensation
