A cholinergic crisis may be triggered by a number of drugs or chemicals that result in an accumulation of acetylcholine at neuromuscular junctions.
Causes of a cholinergic crisis:
(1) organophosphorus pesticide
(2) nerve agent
(3) nicotine
(4) ingestion of toxic mushrooms (Amanita, Inocybe, Clitocybe)
(5) therapy with an acetylcholinesterase inhibitor
(5a) myasthenia gravis
(5b) post-anesthesia reversal of a neuromuscular blocking agent
(5c) postoperative urinary retention
