Description

Catterall classified the radiographic appearance of the femoral head in Legg-Calve-Perthes disease. The author is from Hospital for Sick Children in London.


Radiographic Appearance

Group

necrosis in the anterior aspect of the epiphysis only; no collapse and no bony sequestration is seen

I

larger area of necrosis in the anterior epiphysis; area of collapse with bony sequestration present; metaphysis may show cystic change anteriorly

II

anterior and most of the posterior epiphysis is involved; collapse with extensive bony sequestration; metaphyseal changes present; femoral neck may be broadened

III

total collapse of the epiphysis; significant deformity with flattening of the head; epiphysis may be displaced anteriorly or posteriorly; extensive metaphyseal changes
