Description

Abuse and maltreatment of a geriatric patient can be classified into 6 broad categories.


 

Categories of elder abuse and maltreatment:

(1) physical abuse, resulting pain and/or injury

(2) sexual abuse, which may involve the genitalia, mouth or anus

(3) neglect of basic needs

(4) psychological abuse

(5) financial and material exploitation

(6) violation of basic human rights (freedom of choice, liberty, privacy, other)

 

Neglect may be:

(1) physical (hygiene, clothing, ambient temperature, other)

(2) emotional

(3) nutritional (starvation, fluid deprivation)

(4) medical (failure to provide essential medical care)

 

Often an elderly patient may be subject to more than one type of maltreatment.
