Outpatient parenteral antibiotic therapy (OPAT) can have different outcomes.
Categories:
(1) cure or success
(2) improved or partial success
(3) failure
Cure or success:
(1) resolution of infection at completion of therapy
(2) no adverse events
(3) no readmission
(4) no unplanned changes to antimicrobial regimen
(5) no need for additional therapy
Improved or partial success:
(1) need to make an unplanned change antimicrobial event or an adverse event
(2) no readmission
(3) achieved an improvement but not complete resolution
Failure:
(1) progression of infection or non-response
(2) readmission due to adverse event, need for surgery or other cause
(3) death for any reason
Indeterminate:
(1) readmission for reason unrelated to infection or adverse effect of therapy
