Exposure to various forms of electromagnetic energy can result in cataracts.
Risk factors:
(1) accidental exposure to high voltage electricity
(2) occupational exposures
(3) exposure to lightning
The onset of the cataracts is typically delayed.
Clinical features:
(1) history of exposure to electricity or lightning
(2) bilateral cataracts
(3) exclusion of alternative causes for the cataracts
The patient may experience other damage to the eyes (optic atrophy, retinal detachment, etc). These injuries tend to be acute.
