Description

A catalyst is a substance that affects the rate of a chemical reaction.

Features of a catalyst:

(1) affects the rate of a chemical reaction

(2) is not consumed by the reaction

(3) remains unchanged after the reaction

The phase of the substrates may be gaseous or liquid.

The phase of the catalyst may be gaseous, liquid, or solid.

If the phase of the substrates and the catalyst are the same, then the catalysis is homogeneous.

If the phases differ, then the catalysis is heterogeneous.

The katal is the SI unit for catalytic activity of a catalyst.
