Description

The cargo of a dry bulk carrier can undergo liquefaction which can make the ship unstable.

Cargoes that can undergo liquefaction:

(1) metal ores: iron, nickel, bauxite

(2) fluorospar

(3) some types of coal

(4) sinter or pellet feed (iron ore)

A cargo that may liquefy is designated as a Group A hazards by the IMSBC Code.

Risk factors for liquefaction:

(1) excess moisture (above the Flow Moisture Point, or FMP)

(2) vibration from movement, waves and/or machinery

(3) fine particle size

Hazards associated with liquefaction:

(1) altered center of gravity, which can cause a ship to roll and capsize

(2) worker entrapment
