Description

Colchicine poisoning can result in cardiotoxicity. Severe cardiac injury is associated with a poor prognosis.

Patient selection: colchicine toxicity

Cardiac effects:

(1) reduced cardiac output which can progress to cardiogenic shock

(2) cardiac arrhythmias (complete heart block, ventricular tachycardia, other)

Elevation of serum troponin concentrations correlates with myocyte damage.

The presence of cardiogenic shock is associated with a poor prognosis, especially in patients with multi-organ failure. ECMO may be effective in some patients.
