Description

If snow is deep enough to block the tailpipe of a vehicle, then carbon monoxide can back up into the vehicle.

Carbon monoxide formed during the ignition of gasoline or diesel fuel is usually released through the tailpipe. Obstruction of the tailpipe by snow or ice prevents this release.

The typical scenario is a heavy snow storm with people stuck in traffic or trying to stay warm.

Griffin et al demonstrated that lethal levels of carbon monoxide can develop after obstruction of the tailpipe within a few minutes even if the windows are open.
