Chronic exposure to carbon disulfide (CS2) can result in an encephalopathy and other neurotoxic effects. Neurotoxic effects may persist or even progress after exposure to CS2 has stopped.
Mechanism: small vessel vasculopathy (microangiopathy)
Clinical features:
(1) headache
(2) unpleasant dreams
(3) memory impairment
(4) fatigue
(5) anorexia
(6) emotional lability or other psychiatric symptoms
(7) associated polyneuropathy
Findings on imaging studies:
(1) cortical atrophy, usually mild
(2) lesions in the subcortical white matter
(3) lesions in the corona radiata
(4) lesions in the basal ganglia
(5) lesions in the brainstem
(6) prolonged mean transit time in the total brain parenchyma
Complications:
(1) stroke
