Some patients with cannabinoid hyperemesis (CH) may develop acute renal failure (ARF). It can occur with both natural and synthetic cannabinoids.
Patient selection: cannabinoid hyperemesis
Outcome: acute renal failure
Patients find relief of hyperemesis symptoms by taking a hot bath or shower, which result in hyperthermia and accentuate dehydration.
Risk factors for acute renal failure:
(1) prolonged vomiting with dehydration with prerenal azotemia
(2) rhabdomyolysis
(3) hyperthermia from hot showers/baths
Other causes of acute renal failure should be excluded.
