Candy cane esophagus refers to the gross appearance of this type of esophagitis.
Clinical features:
(1) chest pain
(2) odynophagia
(3) dysphagia
(4) variable abdominal pain
(5) variable left shoulder pain
The esophagus shows alternating bands of pink/red and white mucosa that resemble a candy cane.
Causes:
(1) ingestion of boiling hot liquid
(2) thermal injury from smoking freebase cocaine
(3) other forms of thermal injury
