Description

A Candida fungus ball in the urinary tract may mimic nephrolithiasis.


 

Synonym: Candida bezoar, Candida mycetoma

 

Most Candida species have been implicated as causing a fungus ball.

 

Risk factors:

(1) neonate

(2) immunosuppression

(3) diabetes mellitus

(4) prolonged antibiotic therapy

(5) structural abnormality of the urinary tract

(6) corticosteroid therapy

(7) prior instrumentation of the urinary tract

 

The patient may present with:

(1) symptoms mimicking nephrolithasis

(2) obstructive uropathy

(3) bacterial urinary tract infection

 

Diagnosis may be made by:

(1) urine or biopsy culture

(2) microscopic examination of retrieved material
